Royal Castle "Ardenne"

King Léopold II built this royal Castel of Ardenne in Houyet in 1874

in the magnificent park of the Domain of Ardenne.

It was the most beautiful castle in Belgium.

The King Léopold II made a luxury hotel to attract to Houyet

crowned heads and the largest fortunes from all over the world ;

he wanted Belgium and more specifically Houyet,

to become Europe's prime tourist destination.

Mission accomplished !

This big european palace had a fabulous period between 1899 and 1949,

first under the management of the Compagnie des Wagons-Lits until 1911,

then under the management of the Marquet family from 1922 to 1949.

Badly damaged by the 2 world wars, the royal Castel of Ardenne

finally closed its doors in 1950.

The castle was abandoned and destroyed by flames in 1968

before being demolished and razed in 1970.
